Advanced English and Writing Support

Are you an advanced English language learner struggling with concepts your teachers and native speakers can't seem to explain?

Are you trying to write at the undergrad or graduate level and finding the support you school offers is not enough?

I can almost certainly help!

  • I’ve been reading since before I was three and I've read 2 to 5 books most weeks or most of my life.

  • I've been writing since I was ten.

  • I taught writing as a TA in grad school—including to other grad students.

  • I've been an active member of the Austin-based SlugTribe speculative fiction writing critique group since early 2019.

  • I have a lifelong interest in language that led to me taking my first undergrad linguistics class at 15.

  • I wrote my undergrad thesis on how theory-of-mind impacts the way autistic vs non-autistic children understand lies and irony.

  • I got a perfect score on the verbal section of the GRE (also, a 169 on the math section).

  • I pursued a PhD in computational linguistics where I hoped to basically invent the field of computational pragmatics. I did not achieve that, but I still learned a lot from PhD-level coursework.

  • A lot of what I read is on linguistics, as well as broader cognitive science topics.

There's no question that I understand language and how to to use it—at least where English is concerned. However, ultimately what matters for tutoring is not the ability to do but the ability to teach. And for that I can say that:

  • My linguistics background and lifelong interest in how language works meant I was able to explain a lot of features of English to my students—especially adults professionals in Turkey—that had eluded them for years.

  • In a similar fashion, I can explain stuff about formal academic writing that people have complained to me that their writing center tutors could not.

If you're struggling with English as a second language or writing, here's how to hire me. Or, if you think your question is interesting enough, shoot me an email—if I agree, I'll answer it publicly for free!
