Magpie Pinette – Magpie Consulting

Who am I?

Hi, I’m Magpie Pinette. After a career that included teaching English in Turkey and Korea, not getting a PhD in linguistics—but learning a lot from the attempt, and over five years working as a Machine Learning Engineer, I've decided to pursue self-employment.

My background means that I have an unusual convergence of talents, that can bridge gaps people often have a hard time filling, including:

  • Business and technical

  • People and systems

  • Linguistics and computer science within a cognitive science concept

  • Precise language and high-level math

  • How to implement and when not to implement

I think that success ultimately lies in doing what a lot of people want but not a lot of people are doing—and which I am able to do. I’ve got “not doing what others are doing” pretty well covered: I’ve spent most of my life trying to be more normal. I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I can do as well: not just in specifics, but also in terms of predicting under what circumstances I can do something I’ve never done before.

And so it is figuring out the last part—what people want—that I’m still working on. Right now, I’m in the phase of testing hunches through experimentations and small bets. Some of these are projects of various sorts, but if you’re on this page you’re probably interested in my consulting business. Currently, I'm offering three kinds of consulting services:

I currently live near Galveston Bay with three feathered bipeds, although long-term I'd like to move either to San Antonio, Texas Hill Country, or back to New England.

I think that a lot of what I has to offer ties into my unusual reading ability. I'll have more to say about that on my coming reading 'resume' and TBR list pages, as well as:

I have an interest in recreational mathematics, especially with art and design. The Reuleaux triangle puzzle drawing I'm using for the ND career coaching was the result of me trying to calculate how to evenly divide a Reuleaux triangle for the purpose of making puzzles.
